Personally, I blame Volkswagen, as well as the ACO for not instituting an effective cost control (while still maintaining very high technology) roadmap the moment Dieselgate hit. And, really, they still haven’t done that, they’ve instead shed the high technology.

I’ll give it that the ACO didn’t foresee Dieselgate, but the scandal blew up in 2015, right at the height of WEC’s strength and popularity. You’d think the ACO would immediately start talking to Porsche and Audi about measures to at least keep Toyota company until 2020, all while opening up privy LMP1.
